It has been far too long since my last blog post but it has been quite a busy couple of months and I keep forgetting to take a minute to sit down and write something. You can probably tell by this that I am literally the biggest procrastinator since when I say I have been busy, yes I have had exams and a busy festive period, but I have also been spending a lot of time binge watching The US Office so I don’t really have an excuse.
However, the fun and excitement of December has been and gone now and it is unfortunately time to get back to normality. I have to admit that I hit an annual low point in January and I know many of you guys will be the exact same so I thought I would talk about some of the things I am trying to do to get over the January blues.
One of the main things I hate about January is the dark evenings without the glistening Christmas lights; all I want to do is to sit in my living room with the fireplace on and binge watch something. So if you are like me I thought I would give my top suggestions/ current obsessions on what to watch to lighten the mood on these dark nights. Personally, I enjoy watching comedies to immediately lift my spirits. As I already said, I have finally jumped on the US Office bandwagon and honestly I am wondering where this show has been all of my life; I don’t think I have ever laughed so much at anything. If you are like me and late to the party, then definitely go and watch it as soon as possible because it is hilarious, and if you have already seen it then I would say there is nothing wrong with watching it again (and again and again and again). Embarrassing side note- if I don’t have a relationship like Jim and Pam someday then I will have the January blues every month. I am 100% into feel good, funny shows which always make me feel happy so if you are the same I thought you may appreciate some suggestions, mostly available on Amazon Prime or Netflix: Schitts Creek(HILARIOUS), Gilmore Girls (of course), Friends(always), Parks and Recreation(on my watch list a.t.m), Grace and Frankie, Gavin and Stacey, The Royle Family and Modern Family. I will probably do another blog post on television and movies soon and include some more dramatic shows so I won’t say too much right now, but if you haven’t seen any of these shows I would definitely recommend!
However I have to confess that sometimes watching these shows makes me wish I had their lives (another embarrassing confession), so I think finding time to spend with your friends and family is maybe the most important thing. Most of you will probably be like me- kind of skint after Christmas and having a social life might seem like a faraway dream. While I am not too bothered about numerous fancy nights out or constant catch up lunches, I know that it is still so important to see my friends as much as possible. Embracing all of the people that make my life special is an essential way to get out of this January rut, so doing things like movie nights and going for walks are great ways to spend time with them without spending a lot of money! Also, try and get dates booked in the diary for things you all want to do this year so you have lots of things to look forward to, which will help get you through the duller days.
Speaking of planning things, I know everyone is already thinking about summer and wishing time would speed up, and I don’t see any harm in looking at locations for your next trip because it is definitely something I will be planning as you are reading this. As well as the big summer trips, I know not everyone is able to go to their dream locations (Santorini will have to wait until I win the lottery), but it isn’t all about where you are going as long as you can go with people you will have a good time with, so even planning a weekend trip to the nearby countryside could end up being a lot of fun.
Possibly the most obvious thing to say here is to try your best to be a bit healthier. I really don’t mean to be another annoying health freak because believe me they get on my nerves sometimes but I have annoyingly come to realise that being healthy does make you feel better. After the festive period, I felt so guilty thinking about the amount of cake and sweets and crisps I ate so I have been trying to start eat healthier, thanks to my smoothie blender from Santa which I would highly recommend as well as giving up meat entirely. Another thing I am trying to do is to find some time to go outside and take a walk. Honestly, this is not as much my advice as it is my parents who always tell me this exact thing, and I know it works because parents are always right! I walk quite a lot going to and from university and around campus, but one of the things I am trying to do more is taking a leaf out of my sister’s book by going out just to enjoy a walk. This is probably one of the main reasons I would love to have a dog since I would have to go out walking everyday, so if you already have a dog you are half way there!
Hopefully this will help you find a more positive outlook on January and look forward to what 2019 has to offer, personally I am quite excited for a new year of possibilities. Have an amazing weekend no matter what you are doing. Happy Friday!
